Many people do not take the SOP’s and LOR’s seriously. Admission committee guys can easily spot the difference between copied Statement of Purpose and your original one.
These SOPs are an essential part of your application packet. You have to be extremely clear about your goals both personal and professional and best if its pithy and concise to the point. This is your only chance to talk and convince admission committee that you are suitable candidate they are searching.
Some tips to write a good SOP.
Do not read samples. Trust me, you are more original when you start from scratch and just know what an SOP is all about.
Please avoid philosophy in first paragraph. I saw many SOP’s start with some kind of motto or a proverb or quote. Common guys, admission committee has no time for your philosophy, just write about yourself and why they need to select you.
- Don’t write about how you got motivated from your childhood stuff or about the first tv set you repaired. Write about your research interests.
- Don’t write a lengthy SOP, it should not be more than two pages. Do you know one of my friend wrote an SOP of 12 pages and in that 4 pages are about his high school, I tried to persuade him not to send it, he didn’t listen to me. Now he didn’t get atleast one admit from univs in his ambi and mod list.
